10 Ways to Have Better Conversations

What a week! If it wasn’t enough to have the state election, Halloween, US election, state of origin, Melbourne Cup, and Mandalorian Season 2, it’s been another week of sickness in camp Morris. The highlight of the week for me was running 13k on the weekend in 77’ so just under 6’ kms but I must confess I did this without pushing a pram so it felt like cheating. The low was more sleep deprivation and everything that comes with that. Harvey my 1-year old was GP diagnosed with Croup earler this week so started steroids but didn’t get better so ended up in ED yesterday and has been diagnosed with Rhinovirus! Not contracted from eating raw Rhino as the name may suggest. Poor little guy has had 3 COVID tests this year and 2 ED visits. Depsite that of course we are very lucky and both kids are generally very healthy. Seems to be on the mend now. But now of course I’m sick again, and hoping to recover over the weekend and then catch back up on work next week. Tag teaming days off with my wife and the house is just a shambles. The joys. Thank you all so much for your support during this past week. Fyi: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/conditions/ear-nose-throat/Pages/Rhinovirus-Infections.aspx Looking forward to a healthier week next week and team things may ramp up in this post-election world.

I’ve been inspired lately by those of you who reply in kind with your own thoughts, shares or stories from the week so thank you wholeheartedly. It’s been a commitment of mine each week for more than 6 months now to try in my way to contribute to an authentic, human, inclusive, learning culture and as you know I’m passionate about innovation, so if all we think is all we’ve thought, then all we’ll achieve is whatever we’ve already achieved. I’ll steal a Yoda quote “you must unlearn what you have learned” to achieve your full potential by actively seeking new ideas and perspectives. And while I’m behind on a few BAU things, I try to never neglect people or culture, because these are the things that matter most.

My only share for this week is a share I’m borrowing from a share that a colleague shared with me and its worthy of sharing it on with you 😊

10 ways to have a better conversation

Well worth the 15 mins. My favourite is #9 – Listen. “If your mouth is open, you’re not learning.” “No one ever listened their way out of a job.” I love this. A good reminder for us all. How often in a conversation are we just waiting for a chance to speak rather than listening to understand? How often are we watching our phone when talking to someone and what message does that send?

When your job hinges on how well you talk to people, you learn a lot about how to have conversations -- and that most of us don't converse very well. Celeste Headlee has worked as a radio host for decades, and she knows the ingredients of a great conversation: Honesty, brevity, clarity and a healthy amount of listening. In this insightful talk, she shares 10 useful rules for having better conversations. "Go out, talk to people, listen to people," she says. "And, most importantly, be prepared to be amazed."

Keep well and please prioritise that which matters most! 😊
